the power of the word yet

Last week I went to an orientation for my daughter who is starting Kindergarten in the Fall. I can’t even believe we are here already! There are so many emotions for me right now. Mainly I am excited for her, but I am also a little bit sad about this pre-school stage of her life ending. And honestly a little bit scared for what I don’t know, yet. Change is good, but the unknown can be overwhelming. Cue my anxiety!!

Anyway, during the orientation, one of the Principals briefly mentioned a concept called the power of “yet”. Some of you might know this, but I had never heard of this concept.

Basically, I was BLOWN away.

The Principal talked about the power of using the word “yet” when our kids start to get frustrated or down on themselves. For example, if your child is trying to spell a word and she says, I can’t spell. You would say, “You can’t spell yet.”

I actually used this tactic on my daughter the very next day. She was drawing and getting frustrated. She said, “mama, I can’t draw good.”

Which is actually a bunch of malarky because her pictures are better than anything I can draw, but instead of saying of course you can, I said, “you can’t draw a horse yet.”

And I emphasized the word so she really heard what I was saying.

She looked up at me with wide curious eyes and I could see something click in her head.

I then followed up with, “if you keep trying you will get it!”

And instead of her scribbling out the picture or throwing it out, like she normally does, she kept drawing.

It was SUCH a teachable moment.

But not for her.

For me.

It made me realize that the concept of the power of yet, is something I need to employ in my own life. And, instill that mindset in my clients too.

You see, how many times have you found yourself saying something negative like, “I don’t have enough followers on social media.”

“I’m not making enough money in my business.”

“I haven’t gotten promoted.”

“I haven’t lost the baby weight.”

When you say those things to yourself, you are in a place of negativity. You are focused on what you aren’t doing and what you don’t have.

And if you focus on scarcity, guess what? That is what you attract. And it can feel incredibly impossible to overcome and to succeed.

But what if instead, you take those same sentences and add the word, “yet” to it.

And watch what happens.

MAGIC!

“I don’t have enough followers on social media yet.”

“I’m not making enough money in my business yet.”

“I haven’t gotten promoted yet.”

“I haven’t lost the baby weight yet.”

Do you see what it does? It creates a completely different vibe around the thought. The thought becomes more positive and way more empowering for you.

Positivity and possibility come into play in a major way.

This one little word with three letters can be the difference between giving up on yourself and pushing through to the other side where success waits for you.

So the next time you find yourself focusing on the negative, rephrase your thoughts to include the word yet.

I kind of feel like I want to get a super cute engraved necklace with the word YET. And wear it as a reminder that everything I want and desire in life is possible. I just haven’t gotten there, yet.

And remember ladies, you’re not fully dressed until you sparkle!
