mindset to stay on goals

So here we are, in the third week of January. 3 weeks into 2019 and three weeks into the resolutions and goals we made to become new and improved versions of ourselves.

Many of us are embarking on healthier eating plans, fitness routines, launching new business building initiatives, putting ourselves together more on a daily basis or maybe even doing a dry January.

I myself am still going strong on the goals I set related to my business, my finances, my relationships and my personal brand, however:

I actually don’t make resolutions, I make goals.

I think it’s better to strive to improve yourself rather than “resolve” to change something about yourself. It’s a simple mindset trick, but I believe you are more likely to succeed if you see your work as a positive enhancement rather than a need to change something negative about yourself.

It’s great to want to feel better, evolve or improve on an area of your life you feel is lacking, but it’s also important to remind yourself that you are OK as you are. Starting from that place, makes getting to your goal that much easier!

So while I am going strong on my goals, I won’t lie, most of it takes effort. And I have to continuously be intentional about the choices I make. It’s not as easy as I had imagined it would be.

Especially the goal I set about being more mindful of my clothing budget. Talk about TOUGH. I have been tempted multiple times already, those fashion bloggers are killing me with the Spring releases!

I know how I feel, so I wanted to check in and see how are you doing with the goals you set for yourself on January 1?

Have you felt like giving up or even said screw it, I am not ready for this?

If you have, I want you to understand that it’s not uncommon. Did you know that there is some crazy stat that came out of a recent study done by Strava (a social networking site for athletes) that says that most people give up on their resolutions on or around January 12th.

January freakin’ 12th! Talk about not giving yourself a chance.

And if you haven’t given up by January 12, almost 80% of all resolutions are abandoned by February. In fact, only 8% of people who set resolutions actually achieve them.

WOW.

So I have to ask, Why?

It takes 21 days to break an old mental habit and 66 days to create a new one. So why do people give up on the 12th day?

What happens to us that we give up on ourselves so easily? We would never give up on a friend or a family member that quickly. So why do we do it to ourselves?

Well, the biggest reason I can uncover is that we have unrealistic expectations. We live in a world of instant gratification and we want results immediately.

But we all know, life doesn’t work like that. You won’t magically lose 30lbs or earn $100K overnight. It takes time, effort and consistency.

It takes showing up for yourself. Every. Single. Day.

I am someone who loves to motivate and inspire people to keep going with their goals and dreams and part of my job as a coach is to help people stay accountable, motivated and confident in their choices and actions.

So I thought maybe it would be helpful to share a few questions you can ask yourself to check-in on where you are with your mindset related to your goals.

If you are feeling unmotivated, perhaps these questions can invigorate you back into action. Or remind you of why you wanted to enhance yourself to begin with.

These questions will focus on your mindset and the motivation behind why you want to enhance an area of your life or business:

  • Who do you want to be in 2019?
  • How do you want to feel?
  • What are you focused on in your business or your life?
  • What is your top priority?
  • How do you want to spend your days?

Now that you are reminded about what you want to see your life look and feel like, now it’s time to remember what it is exactly you are setting out to accomplish:

  • What changes do you want to make?
  • Is your goal specific and measurable?
  • What steps will you take?
  • Who will support you?

Improvements don’t happen overnight and there is a reason why the word “improvement” starts with the letter “I”. It takes work that only you can do.

But imagine where you could be in 6 months time if you focused on your goals and created an actual plan to get there. If you aren’t sure where to start, send me a message, I can help you!

And remember ladies, you’re not fully dressed until you sparkle!
