Closet Fail
A few days ago I walked upstairs and into my room to find disaster had struck. Well, not really BUT I did find a big mess. My closet had collapsed. I’m not exactly sure what caused it……actually, who am I kidding? I know exactly what happened. I have too many clothes hanging, folded and stuffed in every space available.
My closet is not that big and I share it with my hubs. I seriously dream of the day when I can have a crystal chandelier and an island in a closet that is all mine. Major life goals there!
Anyway….I was annoyed by the mess but I was proud of myself for not getting too “extra” about it. I kind of laughed and did what any normal person would do. I shared it to Insta Stories! Ha!
I tried to clean up what I could and promptly removed anything hanging with tags on it. Not to protect the new clothes, but rather to avoid my husband telling me that I shop too much! #truth.
As I was trying to organize the mess, I kind of realized that maybe this collapse was a blessing in disguise. I now had an opportunity to go through and edit, organize and review exactly what I have to wear. I get to make sure that what is hanging in my closet represents the woman I am now and how my life is evolving because so much is changing for me daily.
Now anyone that knows me, knows I love clothes! I love to feel put together and I love to have new things. BUT I also love to hold onto to clothing because you just never know when something might come in handy or back in style. So for me, it’s definitely a delicate balance of what to keep and what to toss. I do pay attention to what I have though because otherwise we would be having closet collapses way more frequently!
Know What You Have
It got me thinking though about how important it is to take stock of what you have in your closet. Clothes certainly don’t make the woman, but in my opinion your style says so much about how you view yourself and how you want the world to view you!
It’s a major way to communicate your personal brand, enhance your confidence and make you feel good about yourself. You can be trendy, sophisticated, sporty, boho, or a little bit of it all but make no mistake, your style plays a huge role in your life.
In my opinion, whatever your style is, it is important to curate a look that lets the world know that you value yourself. Because if you value yourself, guess what, it sends a message that others need to value you too!
The Benefits Of Curating Your Clothes
So if you haven’t taken the time to do a little fall clean out I encourage you to do so. There are so many benefits to doing it!
1. Feel good about where you are in your life. Are you a newly minted stay at home mom now who only has suits and work dresses hanging in her closet? Do you have clothes for when you are ten pounds lighter or “just in case you gain some weight”? Get them out of there! Those clothes represent a different version of you and are not who you are today. Fill your closet with outfits that work for your current lifestyle. It’s important to celebrate the woman you are today and let go of anything that no longer serves your life.
2. Love who you are in your clothes. Wearing clothes that feel old and tired or don’t fit properly simply doesn’t feel good. Even if they are leggings or yoga pants. Pilled, faded and worn clothing doesn’t make anyone feel like the best version of themselves. As women we have enough to worry about and stress over, we don’t need our clothing to be another area that makes us feel bad or guilty or stressed. When I feel like the best version of myself, I feel energized, confident and like I can do anything. Who doesn’t want to feel that way?!
3. Make room for new. When you remove the old things you actually can see where you might need to add some new pieces. I love this idea because it gives you an opportunity to design and style who you want to be for the coming season. It’s a fun way to tell the universe you are ready for new and different experiences to come into your life. And I don’t know about you guys, but there are so many cute new trends this fall, I seriously want it all!! Bring on the velvet pants….and the amazing night I am going to have in them!
4. Make it easier to get ready. When you have taken the time to curate your clothes to match your lifestyle it is so much easier to get dressed. You can legit grab and go! This is a huge timesaver for any woman, but especially us moms. We don’t have that much time to think about us. So imagine going into your closet and knowing everything in there looks good and works for you. Life Changing!
5. Save a few bucks. When you know what you have in your closet you are less likely to buy the same things over and over. Allow yourself to have a clear view of what you own and love it all. When you know you own one great pair of black skinny jeans (ok maybe two, bc you need a deconstructed pair too!)you are less likely to buy another pair at the store. See how that works! Boom, I just made you money!!
I am about half way through my edit and I have found things that I am going to let go of because they just don’t serve my life anymore. It actually feels liberating to do it! So try it and let me know how it goes for you.
And remember, you’re not fully dressed until you sparkle!
