How to Set Smart Goals

We Did It!
So, we did it ladies!! We made it through another holiday season, woo-hoo! I am giving you all virtual high fives as you read this! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are making it through school vacation week without any major damage to your house or your kids!

But in all seriousness, it’s hard to believe that the celebrations are over and we are about to head into a new year.

2018 In The Making
As we rapidly approach 2018, I am thinking about what I want this next year of my life to look like. I’ve been trying to determine what I want for my business, my family, my personal health, my finances. You name it and I am thinking about it!

Has anyone else begun to think about it?

In full disclosure, I’m also wondering if I can find a cute sequined top online for my NYE celebration and get it delivered on time, but clearly, that’s for another blog post or probably my Instagram!

We Aren’t Resolving Anything!
This year, I have decided that none of us should make resolutions. Nope, we are not “resolving” to do anything. Why not? Well, as I thought about what it meant to make resolutions, I realized that it was just too passive for all of us!

Instead, I want us to make goals. Why? Because goals are a specific way to identify what we want to have happen in our lives. The best part, when we create SMART goals, we attach a clear, focused and strategic plan to actually achieve them!

Resolutions are all well and good. But if you don’t have a specific end game in mind and a plan for how to get there what happens? You end up using your treadmill as a closet by May. I’m not into that. Not for me and certainly not for you!

So, Are You In?
Yes! You got it girl…here is the Glitter Map for how to set SMART goals that will make your business and your life shine!

1. Be Specific.
The more specific you can be about what it is you want to achieve the better off you will be. Vaguely saying I want to grow my business isn’t enough. You need to be very clear about how you want to grow.

2. Make it Measurable.
Your goal should also be measurable in some way. If you are thinking about your social media presence and want to grow your following online, go ahead and give yourself a metric to work towards. You can focus on anything you like: a certain number of followers, an increased percentage in engagement. It doesn’t matter, as long as you make it measurable!

3. Make it Attainable.
As you set your goal, make sure it’s something that is attainable. Meaning, are you willing to put in the work to make it happen? What do you need to do to get there? If you want to be an influential blogger but have zero idea what WordPress is, you need to start there. What skills do you need to learn, what classes should you take, what mentors should you seek out?

4. Relevant.
Make sure that your goal is relevant to you and your business and supports your overall efforts for your work. In other words, does this goal make sense? If it feels like a disconnect to your brand, your business or you then it’s not the right goal.

5. Time-based.
It’s important to set a timeline for when you want to accomplish your goal. Deadlines will help keep you on track and accountable. Not to mention a ticking clock will create some serious motivation to get it done!

Example To Help Frame Your Goal Setting:

Non-Specific Goal: I want to grow my business.

Specific: I will gain 5 new clients for my interior design business.
Measurable: I will measure my progress by how many new clients I sign while maintaining my existing clients.
Attainable: I will launch a social media campaign, create a referral program and advertise in my local publications.
Relevant: Adding new clients to my business will help me increase my revenue.
Time-based: I will secure 3 new clients in the next 90 days.
